The 2009 CFR Junior Presentation night took place on the 18th September at the Cleator Moor Celtic Clubhouse. Alan Bowness was invited to present the awards. The large turnout enjoyed the buffet, awards ceremony and raffle, serving as the perfect end to a fantastic season with much hard work put in by all involved.
U8 Girls
With the girls growing up fast we didn’t have an under 8 girls championship as such, we only had four girls in it with 3 of them only running one race, and the other running two. We’ve had a couple of new recruits late on in the season so I am hopeful for a good year next season. The following all competed:
Niamh Shuttleworth
Alex Walker
Shauna Donaldson
Jude Law
U8 Boys
This category had five runners completing 4 or more races with a further three running two races. These lads have had a great season with all of them regulars at the training sessions on Saturday mornings.
In 6th place: Kyle Anderson
In 5th place: Harry Lamb
In 4th place: Euguan Simpson
In 3rd place: Samuel Graham
In 2nd place: Thomas Adams
This young lad showed some real potential last season coming runner up and has continued to progress at a pace.
Boys U8 Champion 2009: Zac Anderson
U10 Girls
What a contest this season has been in this category, the top two neck and neck every race with only seconds between them, 3 girls ran more than 4 races with a further 4 running 2. You only have to have a look at the results for this category to see how close this has been.
In 7th place: Andrea Kellet
In 6th place: Lucy Edwards
In 5th place: Kia Shuttleworth
In 4th place: Kerry Regan
In 3rd Place: Elsa Whelan
In 2nd place: Cery’s Atkinson
U10 Girls Champion 2009: Last year’s girls one to watch Bramble Park
U10 Boys
This group was dominated by the winner winning 5 out of 5 races. The rest of the field always close behind with some marvellous tussles. 4 runners completed 4 or more races with a further 3 completing 2 races, one being new signing Mark Brailey who looks promising.
In 7th place: Oliver Whitehurst
In 6th place: Dale Atkinson
In 5th place: Mark Brailey
In 4th place: Joseph Dugdale
In 3rd place: Robert Farrar
In 2nd place: Joseph Atkinson
U10 Boys Champion 2009: Oliver Dawson
U12 Girls
Only 2 girls in this category with both girls having beat each other so it was always going to be tight, they have both had a cracking season and really worked hard.
This years runner up: last years U10 winner Niamh Hedley
U12 Girls champion 2009: for the second year running Lucy Whelan
U12 Boys
Yet another tight category with only 2 points separating the top two, some cracking races with the winner coming first in 4 races and the runner up winning 3. 3 runners completed 4 or more races with another 2 finishing 2 races.
In 5th place: Philip Jennings
In 4th place: Frankie McAleavey
In 3rd place: Kieran Riley
In 2nd place: Joseph Smith
U12 Boys champion 2009: last years U10 champion David King
U14 Girls
We had 4 girls in this category but we’ve seen some fine racing. A new face on the fells showing some real determination to hold off last year’s winner and runner up. Watch this category next season as these girls get stronger and I’m sure there will be a champion or two among them in the near future.
In 4th place: Molly McAleavey
In 3rd place: Sian Riley
In 2nd place: Last years winner Alice Rea
U14 Girls champion 2009: Ellen Regan
U14 Boys
One of the strongest categories within the championship with all 6 competitors completing 4 or more races. The top 3 were never in much doubt with the others never giving up and running some fine races, sometimes in awful conditions: Latterbarrow Loop springs to mind. One of these days I’ll be getting a call from “childline”!
In 6th place: Jack Riley
In 5th place: Sam Farrar
In 4th place: Cieran Simpson
In 3rd place: Thomas King
In 2nd place: last years U12 winner Tom Wright
U14 Boys champion 2009: William King
U16 Girls
We have currently no U16 girls in this category, but we have a couple moving up next season.
U16 Boys
This category had only one competitor which was last years U14 champion. He has had a great season in races on the fell up and down the country and on the track. He has improved so much that his dad is finding it hard to keep pace with him.
This years U16 boys champion: Nathan Thompson
U18 Boys
Fresh from their AS studies these two competed in the senior categories in the Jarret Jaunt, Blakes Heaven and Cleator Moor sports races. Fine races from the pair of them but the long legs against the shorter usually wins.
This years U18 runner up: Jamie Riley
Boys U18 Champion 2009: Duncan Eastoe
We’ve had great difficulty with the next set of awards which when you look at all the results and the improvements of individuals during training sessions you’ll see where I’m coming from.
Special awards
Girls one to watch: Niamh Hedley
Boys one to watch: Joseph Dugdale
Most improved: Cery’s Atkinson
Most Promising: Ellen Regan
Personality of the year: Cieran Simpson
Details of the 2010 Championship will be available on the CFR website in late 2009/early 2010. Training continues in earnest on Saturday mornings at 10:30am from Nannycatch car park. See you then!
